Russia’s men had a mixed day after losing 8-7 against New Zealand but won against Scotland who have yet to win a match after losing their opener against Italy.

Canada did not have the perfect first day losing their opening men’s and women’s matches but came back well in their second match as their men’s team soundly defeated Sweden 8-3, with the match ending after six ends having taken five points from the first two ends.

Elsewhere, Switzerland and Sweden both sit on one win each. In the only women’s session of the day, the hosts had the most convincing victory, defeating Hungary 10-4.

The Asian teams would also prove victorious after South Korea won 9-3 against Latvia and Japan defeated a strong Canadian team in the final end 8-7.

Denmark won their match against Norway in a close 8-7 finish while Switzerland won a high-scoring match against Sweden 10-9.Two Manitoba curling teams had their official send off Sunday before making their way to Russia to represent Team Canada in the world junior curling championships.

Skips Mackenzie Zacharias, Jacques Gauthier and their rinks are heading overseas to play in the international competition held in the city of Krasnoyarsk starting Saturday.

The local curling community rallied around the two Manitoba teams at the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club on Sunday.

The hall was decked out in red and white. Curling played on television in the background as coaches and athletes from the women’s and men’s teams thanked their supporters — and roasted their teammates in front of family and friends.

Wearing matching dresses and heels, and suits and ties, respectively, the two teams said goodbye to their supporters back home.

They will be facing a new crowd while surrounded by different sights and sounds in a foreign country.
